Cooking Christmas dinner for 11 with my sister
The whole reason I wanted to start this blog in the first place was to share what food and cooking means to me. The story behind every meal contains so much more than the ingredients and the process. It hints at the complexity of relationships, emotions and personal histories. When my sister Malia and I started talking about plans for Christmas as early as summer, it was because this king of meals is the pinnacle of the relationship between family and food for us. Continue reading →

Now that it is finally BBQ weather, I am craving potato salad. It's that side dish that either captures your heart or leaves you full yet unsatisfied. I have not found a store-bought potato salad that gets the job done, so this weekend I knew the only option was to finally make my first homemade potato salad.
With the holiday season all wrapped up, I have an arsenal of food experiences I can't wait to share, including the execution of Christmas dinner for 11 by my sister and I, a chef's custom menu at an exhibition kitchen and one of the highest-quality office potlucks of all time -- not to mention several other cooking experiments from last fall! But before I dive into all that, I must start with a dinner so unique it's beyond even a dining experience. Joel Robuchon is culinary entertainment on every level.

So a few posts back I made a declaration: I would make that tomato pie digthischick referenced in her blog before tomato season was up. I'm always nervous to make such a commitment in a public forum like this for just the reason I do it in the first place. Stakes are higher. I'm creating expectations I must live up to or disappoint not only myself but anyone who might have heard the hollow echoing of my stated goal. Well, sometimes that pressure is just what I need, and I'm happy to say I enjoyed a most delicious tomato pie served up with a large helping of smug self-satisfaction. I really had the opportunity thrown in my lap, and failure would have been a colossal embarrassment. When you come home from a visit to your grandmother's with a basket full of her garden bounty, including an abundance of tomatoes, you get to work. Continue reading →

So let me start with two disclaimers: 1.) Technically, it was sparkling wine, and this sort of misnomer can get you in trouble here in Wine Country, and 2.) Our anniversary was Sept. 16, so I'm taking a little look back on this one. We celebrated with one of my favorites, a bottle of J Vineyards & Winery sparkling, along with a gift I received for my birthday, which was the week before. Continue reading →

Sorry for the long hiatus, but welcome back to my Weekend Along the Farm Trails! I've had so many more wonderful food experiences since then, I have a lot of catching up to do, but first I want to be sure to finish this tale. There is so much to say and I want to be sure I get all of it, so I've really struggled to finish writing about this experience. But I'm going off of memory, and the longer I wait the harder it gets. So here goes:

If you recall, we had spent Sunday morning touring the New Carpati mushroom farm in Sebastopol, explored family fun and tasted every cheese at Spring Hill Jersey Cheese farm in Petaluma, and escaped the Indian summer heat at Cafe Zazzle downtown Petaluma. After that we were recharged and drove to Tara Firma Farms on the southwest side of Petaluma. This was my favorite stop of the day. There is so much story behind it, and we were lucky to receive our guided tour from owner Tara Smith, so we got the full version.

I love you.

Tomatoes were late this year. But they're making up for it well into fall with incredible bounty. This is exactly the quality that makes me absolutely intoxicated with desire for them. Most of the year, tomatoes are a dull shadow of the rich, vibrant color and flavor they exude for the short time they are available from local soils. Every year I swear I'm finally going to grow my own to ensure my unquenchable lust for sun-ripened, homegrown tomatoes will be fulfilled, and every year I rely on neighbors and friends and small local farmers for their harvest, never quite getting enough. And this year is no different. So I'll just have to make the most of what I can get. A few weeks ago, I brought home these beauties: Continue reading →
